Top 10 Handy HGV Driver Safety Tips from RSM Driver Training
At RSM Driver Training, safety sits at the heart of every lesson. Whether you’re completing your HGV training in Essex or London or you’re already on the road, these HGV driver safety tips will help you stay safe, compliant and confident on every journey.
1) Ensure your truck is safe to drive
Carry out thorough daily vehicle checks before any trip. Confirm documents are valid and components are in good working order. Fix issues before departure to avoid fines, defects or breakdowns.
Daily check reminders
Brakes; Engine oil; Screen wash; Coolant/water; Lights and reflectors; Battery; Tyres (pressure, tread depth, wheel-nut indicators aligned); Seatbelts and head restraints; Mirrors (including blind-spot mirrors if fitted); Fuel tanks and caps; Tachograph/Digi card; Speedometer; Coupling gear (if applicable); Insurance and MOT.
2) Reduce blind spots
Large vehicles and trailers create significant blind areas. Fit and correctly adjust blind-spot mirrors and use them continuously. Our instructors demonstrate mirror set-up and scanning techniques during HGV driver training.
3) Plan safe routes and take regular breaks
Choose familiar routes with safe parking and fewer pedestrian pinch points where possible. Build in rest stops to maintain alertness. Reminder: maximum 9 hours’ driving per day; take a 45-minute break every 4.5 hours (permitted as 15 + 30 minutes).
4) Ensure your load is secure
Allow time to check load distribution and lashing. Tighten straps and confirm the vehicle is not overloaded before departure. If unsure about weight, use the nearest weighbridge. You are responsible for load security.
5) Be prepared for weather and emergencies
Keep de-icer, scraper, torch, high-vis, shovel and a small bag of salt in the cab year-round. In winter, consider an overnight kit in case you are delayed or stranded.
6) Watch your speed and stopping distances
HGV mass increases stopping distance. Slow early for bends, junctions and changing limits—especially when descending, loaded, or in wet weather.
7) Stay alert
Aim for 7–9 hours’ sleep before shifts. If tired, take a break immediately at a safe location. Scan well ahead for developing hazards and anticipate other road users’ mistakes.
8) Eat healthily on the go
Start with a good breakfast and carry nutrient-dense snacks to maintain energy. Avoid long gaps without food to prevent dips in focus and concentration.
9) Do not use a hand-held mobile while driving
It’s illegal and dangerous. Use a legal mount for navigation only and stop in a safe place to make calls or send messages.
10) Steer clear of drink and drugs
Adopt a zero-tolerance approach. Alcohol and drugs (including some medications) impair reaction times. Check labels and consult your GP if unsure.
